Available Dogs

If one of our available orphans tugs at your heartstrings, please fill out our Adoption Application under the “Applications” tab and you will be contacted within 48 hours.  You must be approved to adopt before you can meet our dogs.  All applications require a home visit in order to be approved.

Adoption fees vary with each dog and range from $125-$375, with $325 being the price for most. Adoptions fees are used not only to rescue and place the dog you are personally adopting, but to aid in the future rescue and rehabilitation of other deserving dogs. Adoption fees are necessary; without fees, our rescue efforts would quickly come to an end.

Simon's Story

WE NEED YOUR HELP!!! LOOK AT THIS PRECIOUS PUPPY! Simon was found by a Good Samaritan and taken to The Animal Foundation. He is one very sick little dog. He has all the typical symptoms of parvo even though he has tested negative not once, but twice. Simon can not even hold his head up, he’s that weak. We need $2,000 to treat him! They are checking for an obstruction and running blood work because of his negative parvo tests, but they are also treating him as if he has parvo. This 4 month old boy deserves a chance to live a happy, healthy life! Can you help us help him? Any amount helps! We will do everything we can for Simon. We are fighting for him, and you can help by donating for his care! Hang in there, Simon! You’ve got lots of people pulling for you!

Schafer's Story

UPDATE: Schafer definitely knows basic obedience and will chase a ball and bring it back for you to throw again and again. He’s starting to get playful with the volunteers and sometimes will get mouthy, but it’s so gentle it’s hard to describe. He likes to give you kisses all over your face, and just wants to know what you are doing all the time. He’s not too fond of the water but he’s not terrified of it either. So far he hasn’t been reactive towards dogs even if they are barking at him. We haven’t officially done any dog introductions with him, but we think he will be fine with other nice dogs.

Meet Schafer! Thought to be only about 2 years old, his muzzle makes us wonder what kind of life he’s endured in such a short time. Schafer was spotted running against traffic by a previous adopter. After 2 hours and the help of law enforcement, Schafer was rounded up and taken to the shelter. Like so many shepherds, Schafer wasn’t doing well there and ended up on the transfer list. He was already neutered, so we were able to pick him up right away. He’s slowly coming out of his shell, and we are giving him the time he needs to get comfortable with us. He was happy to get in the back of my car and spend some time at the rescue house, and would come to us for affection. He definitely wants it to be in his terms right now, and that’s ok. We will post more about him as we get to know him.

Flash Gordon's Story

Hi, everyone. My name is Flash Gordon, but you can just call me Gordy if you want. Even though I’m not even a year and a half old yet, my short life has been full of neglect and being bounced around to several different homes. Luckily the last home I was in recognized the fact that I needed help from shepherd experienced people so I can get healthy, and find a home that knows how to raise a shepherd, so they contacted VSR. I bond quickly with people who are kind to me. Right now I am decompressing and getting fed several small meals a day so I can get ready to find my forever home. VSR is still learning about what I like and don’t like so stay tuned for updates on my progress!

Shilo's Story

Life happens, and unfortunately sometimes it just doesn’t go the way we plan or expect it to. Shilo is being returned to VSR after 3 years through no fault of her own. After much soul searching, and endless hours of trying to find a different solution, Shilo’s family has decided to do what’s best for Shilo, instead of thinking only of themselves. Shilo is a beautiful girl, about 5 years old. She bonds very hard to the one person in her family that she decides is hers. Shilo lives with older children and goes to doggy daycare occasionally. Shilo can be an escape artist and has been known to clear a 6 foot fence, so a secure yard, and supervision while outside is a must for this beauty who loves with all her heart. Shilo will need a family with shepherd experience or experience with herding or working dogs. She will need daily mental or physical stimulation to help her be the best she can be. If you would like to bring beautiful Shilo into your family and home, please fill out our online adoption application. It’s the first step in our adoption process.

Gunther “Gunny”'s Story

UPDATE:   Gunther is still looking for that perfect forever home. We have no idea why he has been in our care for a year now. At 4 years old, he’s at that perfect age where he can do just about anything you want and is long past all the annoying puppy behaviors. He would thrive in a home where he has a job to do, as he is truly a dog who loves to work.

UPDATE: Gunther has a ball drive that is hard to even imagine unless you see him in action. That being said, it’s not surprising that Gunny has guarding issues with his ball. Because of his high drive, energy and guarding, Gunther needs to go to a home with teenage kids or adult only home. He does best without other dogs.

Meet handsome 3 year old Gunther. Gunther came to us after being returned to the local shelter for putting his mouth on somebody’s arm. He then developed a hematoma on his neuter site and had to have an additional surgery to correct it. He is healing nicely and we are getting to know more about this beautiful boy. We will update his bio when we know more.

Snickers's Story

UPDATE!! Snickers is now in a foster home, living with a female shepherd and a male golden doodle. She absolutely adores her foster dad! She is wicked smart, and seems to like respectful older kids. Her interest in cats might be a little too much, and a cat-free home would be best for Miss Snickers. She is extremely high energy, and a 4 mile run each day barely takes the edge off her energy.

Meet beautiful Snickers. Thought to be about 3 years old, sweet Snickers was found in the front yard of an animal lover, who went to great lengths to find her owners. Snickers was in pretty rough shape and was very scared and skittish, but since coming into VSR’s care, Snickers has come out of her shell, and is learning to trust. We were just recently able to spay her, as she was in heat when we brought her in. Snickers has been diagnosed with pannus, an eye condition that is easily managed with eye drops. She now takes her daily walks with one of our male VSR orphans, and does fine with him. If you think you have the loving, patient home Snickers needs, please fill out our online adoption application. It’s the first step in our adoption process.

Cheyenne's Story

UPDATE!!! Cheyenne has become one amazing dog! She plays appropriately with dogs of all ages. She is incredibly smart and picks up training very quickly. She isn’t timid at all. She is confident and friendly wherever she goes. She’s got energy for days, and will need lots of mental and physical stimulation. Cheyenne is truly the whole package. Why she hasn’t found her forever home is a mystery to all of us.

UPDATE: It’s been a long wait, but Cheyenne was finally healthy enough to get spayed. She’s up to 61 pounds and she’s looking like a million bucks! We believe Cheyenne is only about 2 years old, and by the looks of things, we doubt she has had any training at all. She is very food motivated, and we are working on her doggy manners. Cheyenne is very people friendly. She has shown us when we are out for walks that she enjoys the company of respectful, well behaved children. She has walked with other big dogs, and once her initial excitement wears off, she is fine in the company of other dogs. We will continue to work with her until her forever family is found. Filling our our online adoption application is the first step in our adoption process.

Full of milk with no puppies to be found, Miss Cheyenne was dumped at the shelter severely underweight and infected with parasites. Cheyenne is in need of some medical attention, as well as needing to gain some weight before it’s safe to spay this friendly, energetic girl. She happily offered us sits when she knew there were treats to be had. Cheyenne will need some time to get adoption ready, but in the meantime, we will get to know more about this petite little peanut. So stay tuned for more updates.

Spark's Story

Have you ever seen a sadder look on a young dog’s face? Precious, petite, year and a half old Spark, has been through 2 surgeries recently. After some sort of accident that degloved the end of her tail, Spark was taken to The Animal Foundation where they amputated about a quarter of her tail. But Spark just couldn’t leave the surgery site alone and was able to get around the dreaded cone and traumatize her newly shortened tail. Tail injuries are very hard on dogs, especially shepherds, so TAF felt the best thing to do was to remove the rest of this tiny girl’s damaged tail. Spark is a very sweet girl, who needs time for her incision to heal. We are guessing it’s pretty painful, as she is quite protective of her back end right now. We were told she is good with other dogs her size and larger, and since she only tips the scales at just under 40 lbs, lots of dogs are her size or larger. There is nothing cuter than a dog with a stumpy, spark plug looking tail, and Spark is absolutely adorable! But we need to do what we have to do to get rid of the sadness in Spark’s eyes and bring back the spark. A loving forever home is just what the doctor ordered. Can you spark the happy flame for our pint sized peanut? Please go to our website and fill out our online adoption application. It’s the first step in our adoption process.

MJ's Story

Meet VSR’s newest heartthrob, MJ. Extra large sized, 3 year old MJ was picked up as a stray, guess when? If you guessed July 4th you would be correct. Poor MJ searches every car looking for his family. He’s a sweet, friendly guy when he isn’t whining for his family. Today he was able to play happily with a ball, and even gave some big wet kisses to a couple of his new friends at the vet clinic. He was previously neutered and he was obviously well fed, so why didn’t his family come looking for him??? We are still getting to know this gentle giant, and when we know more about him, we will update his bio.

Luna's Story

What does Luna’s family look like? All she’s known is heartache. Luna is a 9-year-old GORGEOUS, white GSD currently living in the backyard 24/7 without anyone at home. Her family moved out of the country and left their renter in charge of taking care of her. The caretaker was arrested, and his sister couldn’t bear to take Luna to the shelter. She has become Luna’s guardian angel. Luna’s Good Samaritan can’t bring her home to an apartment and her asthmatic child. But she didn’t give up doing right by Luna. She reached out to VSR to rehome Luna and give her the home she deserves. Luna’s owners verified she is 9 years old, but the vet said she acts like she’s 6! At 85 lbs., Luna needs more exercise and a weight loss program. But don’t tell this beautiful girl she’s anything less than perfect. She once was an indoor dog but will likely need a refresher on going out to use the bathroom. She knows shake and is happy to show you! She’s anxious to learn and please. She wasn’t happy to have her ears cleaned. They weren’t infected but staying outside in the dust made for some dirty ears that will require regular cleaning for a while. She has some worn and broken teeth. VSR will provide her dental upon adoption. Luna is great with kids, other dogs and probably cats. While at the vet’s office, she was happy to meet everyone there, all pets and grateful for the use of air conditioning! Who’s ready to step up and change Luna’s life for the better? Luna is ready for adoption.

Cowboy's Story

UPDATE!!! Cowboy is now in a foster home working on his behavior. Cowboy has some stranger danger and acts inappropriately when coming into contact with strangers. Right now Cowboy needs to go to an experienced adult only home, with a very stable and balanced dog his size.

UPDATE: Cowboy loves playing with other dogs his size. We think Cowboy would do best going to a home with another big balanced dog to play with and show Cowboy the social ropes.

Meet cutie-patootie, Cowboy. This little dumpling was turned in as a stray to the local shelter. As you can imagine, he’s pretty confused right now. We believe he is about 2 years old. We are letting him decompress for a few days, then we will start working on getting to know him. I can tell you that he is very sweet and takes treats very nicely. But stay tuned for more updates as we learn more!

Scout's Story

Meet the newest addition to the VSR family! Scout is a very handsome 10 month old neutered male ready to meet his furever family.

Scout was purchased from a breeder at 8 weeks old. Being blind and raising him alone made it difficult for his owner to train and make corrections. Being all puppy, Scout would grab her shoes and socks off her feet. It was game on! He was hit with a broom or whatever she could grab.

Scout lived with a 12 yo Miniature Schnauzer for a while until the senior was beat to death with a flashlight. Scout was then banished to the backyard.

A Good Samaritan with tons of GSD and rescue experience was notified and took quick action taking him into her home. Scout is neutered, chipped and current on all shots. He has started obedience training, learning to walk on a leash (and doing well), enjoying rides in a car and just learning how to be a puppy dog. He was housebroken after only a week. He pays no attention to small dogs, birds, horses or cats in the neighborhood. However, he can be a bit skittish when meeting new people and large dogs. Due to his need for continued training, he’s not recommended for a family with small children.

Scout needs a calm, kind, active family with GSD experience. NO small children. A family that will continue his training. A proper meet and greet will insure he is okay with cats and small dogs. Are you Scout’s family? He’s ready for adoption folks and won’t be with us long!

Karbon's Story

UPDATE: Karbon is in a wonderful foster home that is able to care for him and his medical needs. Karbon has seizures and is on medications to help keep them to a minimum. His age is estimated to be about 11 years old. He is a gentle giant, getting along with everyone and everything he meets. This big, beautiful boy is Karbon. Picked up as a stray by Animal Control, the shelter listed him as 10 years old. Whether or not that is accurate, we can’t be sure. Karbon is very anxious and nervous, but will run and play if you actively engage him. During his first few nights at our vet clinic, Karbon had a seizure. He broke a few of his toenails during the episode, but has not had another seizure, so we are holding off on putting him on anti seizure meds for now. Karbon also does very poorly in a kennel or crate, and is more relaxed when loose in the home. Karbon did fine with another large dog when walked on leash together. Karbon is in need of a very patient and understanding foster or forever home. He is drop dead gorgeous, and we know that he, just like every other VSR orphan, deserves a home where his life will be changed forever. If you are interested in committing to giving Karbon the home he’s been waiting for, please fill out our online adoption or foster application. It’s the first step of our process.

Opie's Story

UPDATE:  Opie has once again found himself back at VSR. Our little shepherd/beagle mix boy has some very specific requests for his forever family. Opie needs to be the only pet in the home. A home he is happy to share with kids that are at least teenage or older. Because Opie has some anxiety issues, a home where somebody is home most of the day would be ideal. Opie does not like to be bothered when he is sleeping, as sometimes it startles him. Opie has lots of love to give, and is a great snuggler. He also loves to play with toys. Opie has a very high prey drive, and will go to great lengths to try and catch his prey, so a secure yard is also a must. If you have a home that can meet Opie’s needs, please fill out our online adoption application. Opie is ready to find his perfect family.

UPDATE!!!  Unfortunately, Through no fault of his own, Opie has been returned to VSR. Our little man came back looking wonderful! His coat is clean, soft and very shiny! He’s developed a very lean and muscular physique! He can be very particular with other dogs. Opie was a huge hit at our big event recently. If you are interested in meeting Opie and possibly making him a permanent member of your family, please fill out our online adoption application!

Meet VSR ‘s latest faux shepherd, or fepherd, Opie. This little 2 year old shepherd mix peanut came into the local shelter with wounds covering both his back legs. Was he hit by a car? Attacked by another dog? We may never know. But what we do know is that this little 40 lb bundle of joy is a sweet, happy dog no matter what. He’s still recovering from his neuter surgery and his wounds are healing nicely. Once he’s ready, we will get to know more about him and post an update.
