Available Dogs
If one of our available orphans tugs at your heartstrings, please fill out our Adoption Application under the “Applications” tab and you will be contacted within 48 hours. You must be approved to adopt before you can meet our dogs. All applications require a home visit in order to be approved.
Adoption fees vary with each dog and range from $125-$375, with $325 being the price for most. Adoptions fees are used not only to rescue and place the dog you are personally adopting, but to aid in the future rescue and rehabilitation of other deserving dogs. Adoption fees are necessary; without fees, our rescue efforts would quickly come to an end.

MJ's Story
UPDATE: In the few weeks that MJ has been with VSR, we have learned that MJ bonds quickly and loves hard. In typical classic shepherd style, MJ takes his job of protecting his family very seriously. MJ will need a family with experience handling dogs like him. So far he doesn’t seem to be a fan of other dogs, but we are still learning about his canine preferences.
Meet VSR’s newest heart throb, MJ. Extra large sized, 3 year old MJ was picked up as a stray, guess when? If you guessed July 4th you would be correct. Poor MJ searches every car looking for his family. He’s a sweet, friendly guy when he isn’t whining for his family. Today he was able to play happily with a ball, and even gave some big wet kisses to a couple of his new friends at the vet clinic. He was previously neutered and he was obviously well fed, so why didn’t his family come looking for him??? We are still getting to know this gentle giant, and when we know more about him, we will update his bio.

Gunther “Gunny”'s Story
UPDATE: Gunther….. Now this is a dog with some drive! He will chase his jolly balls for hours, take a break and do it all over again. This well behaved boy has been overlooked far too long. When he wants to play he will come up and push his jolly ball at you and “talk” to you if you don’t give him what he wants. He’s even been know to swing it at you if you choose not to pay attention. I can’t even begin to tell you how fun he is. He’s not a fan of other dogs really but he was in a home where there were cats and he was learning to accept them. This gorgeous 4-5yr old male needs a family with strong arms to play ball, a pool to wear himself out in and buckets for him to play with his balls in.
UPDATE: Gunther is still looking for that perfect forever home. We have no idea why he has been in our care for a year now. At 4 years old, he’s at that perfect age where he can do just about anything you want and is long past all the annoying puppy behaviors. He would thrive in a home where he has a job to do, as he is truly a dog who loves to work.
UPDATE: Gunther has a ball drive that is hard to even imagine unless you see him in action. That being said, it’s not surprising that Gunny has guarding issues with his ball. Because of his high drive, energy and guarding, Gunther needs to go to a home with teenage kids or adult only home. He does best without other dogs.
Meet handsome 3 year old Gunther. Gunther came to us after being returned to the local shelter for putting his mouth on somebody’s arm. He then developed a hematoma on his neuter site and had to have an additional surgery to correct it. He is healing nicely and we are getting to know more about this beautiful boy. We will update his bio when we know more.

Cowboy's Story
UPDATE!!! Cowboy is now in a foster home working on his behavior. Cowboy has some stranger danger and acts inappropriately when coming into contact with strangers. Right now Cowboy needs to go to an experienced adult only home, with a very stable and balanced dog his size.
UPDATE: Cowboy loves playing with other dogs his size. We think Cowboy would do best going to a home with another big balanced dog to play with and show Cowboy the social ropes.
Meet cutie-patootie, Cowboy. This little dumpling was turned in as a stray to the local shelter. As you can imagine, he’s pretty confused right now. We believe he is about 2 years old. We are letting him decompress for a few days, then we will start working on getting to know him. I can tell you that he is very sweet and takes treats very nicely. Dutch's Story
Young Dutch is eager to please and work for his human companions. He is friendly and social and loves being outside. He will chase a ball or toys and loves to interact. He has great basic obedience already including a good recall. He’s about 8-9 months old and definitely a puppy with all the energy and mouthy behaviors that come along with it. He has a ton of love to give and is looking for his forever home. He has had no negative reactions to other dogs so far big or small. He kennels well and is only a little vocal when he’s excited to see you. He has a gorgeous soft coat and is just striking in person.

Darby's Story
Recently VSR got a call from TAF regarding a young (7-8 months old) male shepherd with burn wounds. Darby needed our help so we jumped at the chance to get Darby the medical care he needed. This happy boy didn’t seem to notice the burns on his back, shoulder and neck, and just wanted to by a typical, happy puppy. Darby showed us that he already knew how to sit, would happily retrieve a toy, bring it back and give it to you to throw for him again, and also that he knows how to open the lever style door knobs. Darby is also emaciated, so until he is healthy, the vets are postponing his neuter and vaccines. We will keep everybody posted on Darby’s progress and will also post updates as we learn more about him. So stay tuned and don’t touch that dial!

Opie's Story
UPDATE! Opie has once again found himself back at VSR. Our little shepherd/beagle mix boy has some very specific requests for his forever family. Opie would do best as the only pet in the home, as we have found very few dogs that Opie will tolerate. But there have been a few. He is happy to share with kids that are at least 10 years or older. Because Opie has some anxiety issues, a home where somebody is home most of the day would be ideal. Opie does not like to be bothered when he is sleeping, as sometimes it startles him. Opie has lots of love to give, and is a great snuggler. He also loves to play with toys. Opie has a very high prey drive, and will go to great lengths to try and catch his prey, so a secure yard is also a must. UPDATE 10/21/18. Unfortunately, Through no fault of his own, Opie has been returned to VSR. Our little man came back looking wonderful! His coat is clean, soft and very shiny! He’s developed a very lean and muscular physique! He can be very particular with other dogs. Opie was a huge hit at our big event recently. Meet VSR ‘s latest faux shepherd, or fepherd, Opie. This little 3 year old shepherd mix peanut came into the local shelter with wounds covering both his back legs. Was he hit by a car? Attacked by another dog? We may never know. But what we do know is that this little 40 lb bundle of joy is a sweet, happy dog no matter what. He’s still recovering from his neuter surgery and his wounds are healing nicely. Once he’s ready, we will get to know more about him and post an update.

Abbey/Gabby's Story
Beautiful 18-24 month old Abbey/Gabby was living her life on the end of a chain in rural Nevada. Luckily somebody who had the ability to do something about it was notified and was able to negotiate the release of Abbey/Gabby from this life that nobody deserves to have to live. VSR was contacted and we couldn’t say no to this precious girl! She was dirty and scared, but she’s had a bath and has been spayed and is quickly coming out of her shell. She seems to be interested in other dogs (she was living with a couple other dogs when she was surrendered) and has been great meeting new people, as long as they are calm. She prefers to have people squat to her level as it seems to be much less scary to her. Stay tuned for more updates as we learn more about this beautiful girl!
